Born on August 14, 1926, in Northwest (Chesapeake), Virginia, Eldon’s journey was one of unwavering commitment, integrity, and a profound impact on those around him. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at Sentara Leigh Medical Center, at the age of 89.
Early Life and Family Foundations:
Eldon was the son of the late Eldon Lee Miller and Katie Belle Vandegrift Miller. His upbringing in Northwest, Virginia, laid the groundwork for a life characterized by hard work and responsibility. He shared his childhood with his sister, Marie Sawyer, and his brothers, William P. Miller and Carlton Miller.
His personal life was anchored by his devoted marriage to Morris “Ann” Huss Miller. Their partnership was a cornerstone of his life, though Ann preceded him in death. Together, they built a family that was a source of immense pride and joy for Eldon. He was a loving father to his daughter, Cynthia Lynn Johnson (and her husband Eric), and his two sons, Eldon Lee Miller, III (and his wife Kim of Moyock, NC) and Michael Ray Miller (and his wife Kathy of Norfolk, VA). Eldon’s legacy continued through his seven grandchildren: Matthew A. Miller (Christina), Stephen L. Miller (Michelle), Nabiel N. Alawar, Ryan N. Alawar, Rhonya A. Alawar, Daniel R. Miller (Christy), and Luke A. Miller. He was also blessed with six great-grandchildren: Elliot, Henry, Jackson, April, Allie, and Jude, who brought much light and happiness into his later years.
A Life of Service: Military Career:
Eldon L. Miller, Jr.’s commitment to his country was exceptional and spanned over four decades. He retired from the U.S. Army after an impressive forty-three years of active and reserve duty. His military service included critical periods in American history, as he proudly served in both World War II and the Korean War. His dedication to defending his nation was a defining aspect of his character and a source of immense pride throughout his life.
Distinguished Civilian Career:
Following his active military service, Eldon seamlessly transitioned into a distinguished civilian career that showcased his technical skills and leadership abilities. He was employed by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for thirty-eight years, where he held various crucial roles. He began as a shipfitter, demonstrating hands-on expertise in naval vessel construction and repair. His capabilities led him to advance to positions as a planner and estimator, where his meticulous attention to detail and strategic thinking were invaluable.
His expertise was so highly regarded that he was appointed Planning Manager of ship repair for the Royal Saudi Navy in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, a significant international assignment that lasted for seven years. This role underscored his global reputation and the trust placed in his leadership and technical acumen.
After his extensive career in government service, Eldon continued to contribute his skills closer to home. He served as the Office Manager for E. L. Miller, III & Sons Heating and Cooling for twenty-eight years, demonstrating his commitment to supporting his family’s business ventures and applying his vast experience to a new field.
Profound Community and Public Service:
Eldon L. Miller, Jr. was not merely a resident of Moyock; he was a cornerstone of its community, dedicating countless hours to public service and civic engagement. His most prominent role in local governance was serving as a Currituck County Commissioner for twelve years. During his tenure, he played a vital role in shaping the county’s development and addressing the needs of its citizens.
Beyond his elected office, Eldon was a passionate and active participant in numerous community organizations:
- Moyock Baptist Church: His faith was central to his life, and he was a deeply dedicated member of Moyock Baptist Church. He served in various leadership capacities, including Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, Secretary, Treasurer, and Trustee. His commitment ensured the smooth functioning and spiritual growth of his church community.
- Boy Scout Leader: Demonstrating his dedication to youth development, Eldon served as a Boy Scout Leader, mentoring young individuals and instilling in them values of character, leadership, and community service.
- Moyock Ruritan Club: He was not only a dedicated member but also the founder and past president of the Moyock Ruritan Club. The Ruritan Club is known for its community service, and Eldon’s leadership in establishing and guiding this organization speaks volumes about his vision for a thriving local community.
- Moyock VFW Post #10949: As a veteran, Eldon remained committed to supporting his fellow service members. He served as Quarter Master for the Moyock VFW Post #10949, ensuring that veterans’ needs were met and their sacrifices honored.
- AMVETS: His membership in AMVETS further solidified his lifelong dedication to veterans’ advocacy and support.
- Mason: His affiliation as a Mason indicates his involvement in fraternal and charitable endeavors, adhering to principles of brotherhood and community betterment.

A funeral service honoring Eldon’s life was held on Sunday, December 20, 2015, at Moyock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Vic Ramsey officiating. He was laid to rest with full honors in Moyock Cemetery. Memorial donations were suggested to Moyock Baptist Church or the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post #6060, reflecting the causes he held dear. Eldon Lee Miller, Jr.’s memory will continue to be cherished by his loving family and the countless individuals whose lives he touched in Moyock and beyond.
