Voter registration closes, numbers are up

Currituck, NC – Regular voter registration for March 3, 2020 primary elections closed today. Voter registration numbers indicate that the office staff at the Currituck County elections office has been busy.

Total registered voters – as of Friday, February 7 – stands at 20,263 according to Director of the Currituck County Board of Elections, Sydni Banks. That number is an increase of 271 voters from the voter rolls at the end of December 2019.

According to Banks, Unaffiliated voters account for 8,508 – the largest group of registered voters (41.99%); followed by 7,968 registered Republicans (39.32%); 3,591 registered Democrats (17.72%); and 177 registered Libertarians (0.87%).

For the period between late December 2019 and February 7, registered Republicans increased by 166; registered Unaffiliated increased by 156; registers Democrats increased by 12; and registered Libertarians increased by 4.

Banks could not speak to specific numbers; however she did state “… we have had a high volume of registration forms submitted, both new and updates.”

She added “as with any primary, we’ve had a high number of party changes, with most changing to Unaffiliated. We have probably had more updates than new registrations.”

The Currituck County Board of Elections has scheduled to meet at 4 pm on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at the Currituck County Board of Elections office, 2811 Caratoke Hwy, Currituck, NC 27929.

Stated purpose of this meeting is:

  • conduct regular business;
  • review returned absentee ballots
  • conduct preliminary hearings in response to a voter challenge and an election protest filed on Thursday, February 6, 2020.

The next deadline following Tuesdays meeting is the 1st Quarter Campaign Finance reports from candidates due by Tuesday, February 25, 2020. Any candidate over the expenditure threshold of $1,000 has to file quarterly reports. These campaign reports should show financial donations to the candidates campaign, as well as expenditures on items like signs, billboards, mailings, business cards, etc.
