Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Wakefield, Virginia has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch on Saturday, January 11 at 11:25 pm EST, effective until 5 am, Sunday, January 12 for Northeastern NC counties immediately west of Currituck County including:

  • Camden
  • Chowan
  • Gates
  • Pasquotank, and
  • Perquimans

The NWS Office Wakefield also issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the following Southeastern Virginia Cities:

  • Chesapeake
  • Suffolk, and
  • Williamsburg

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is issued when weather conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms during the watch period and over the watch area.

The threat of severe weather is associated with the frontal boundary approaching the area from the west.

Forecasters predict the the front and associated severe weather will affect eastern areas of the forecast area around dawn Sunday morning, with rain possibly continuing through the day on Sunday.

The front will move to the south where it will stall and eventually move back to the north over the area bringing a chance of precipitation on Monday and Tuesday of the coming week.
